Malcolm X’s Grandson Found Dead

According to The Amsterdam News, 28 year old Malcolm Shabazz, grandson of Malcolm X, has been killed in Mexico. His death has also been confirmed by the Twitter and Facebook of a Shabazz family friend named Terrie Williams. Shabazz died of injuries sustained during a robbery according to Talking Points Memo. “He was murdered. He was in Mexico City and I believe they attempted to rob him and he didn’t allow it, so they beat him to death and he died on his way to the hospital,” Juan Ruiz, a member of the California-based labor organization Rumec, told TPM. “This is all I can confirm, everything else is under investigation for the meantime.”

Malcolm Shabazz has had his share of legal troubles in the past. When he was 12 years old, Malcolm set a fire that caused the death of his grandmother Betty Shabazz. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was found guilty of arson, and sentenced to 18 months in a juvenile detention facility.

Throughout adulthood Shabazz also had trouble with the law, he plead guilty to attempted robbery in 2002. For that crime, he served three and a half years in prison. After being released for that crime in 2006, a few months later he was arrested again for punching a hole in a store window.

Shabazz is survived by his mother, Qubilah Shabazz, Second daughter of Malcolm X, Mary Shabazz, and two daughters.
