What is Hip Hop Book Club?
Hip Hop Book Club is an open forum discussion in which we discuss impactful albums/projects within Hip-Hop. We created 4 pillars (Kenny Reeves: Influence, T.Lee: Visuals, Attah ‘A.T.’ Essien- Production and Sobe Ibekwe: Lyrics) as a way of creating a framework for the discussion. Our event is all about crowd participation, so we always strive to create an environment that champions thoughts and commentary from anyone who loves music.
Our next show is 10/30 at Wits End in Deep Ellum where we will cover Kendrick Lamar’s ‘DAMN.’
What void does your business fill in your current industry?
We feel that our business fills the void of how we consume music in the industry’s current state. We live in a microwave society and the shelf life of just about anything is not long at all. We are putting that focus back on the music and going below the surface level to extract key points we may have missed. We are encouraging thought provoking commentary and public speaking skills.
Tell us three lessons you’ve learned while operating your business.
1.) Having the right team is extremely vital to your success.
2.) Failures are always lessons.
3.) Never create a Plan B.
Mentorships are vital, if you could be mentored by anyone in the world who would it be and why?
Sobe: Questlove; his musical knowledge is unmatched. I could learn a ton of shit from him.
A.T.: Diddy. He’s seen and done it all. He has the musical and business acumen, but to me, most importantly, he has the uncanny ability to turn almost anything into a household name. His branding is top notch!
Kenny: Jamie Foxx — (sounds weird right now, but to add context, Jamie is guy who’s gifted in several different areas, television/film, music, comedy , hosting and radio. In many ways I feel like that’s me, with podcasting, blogging, curating unique events, HIP HOP BOOK CLUB, MCing, DJing and I dabble with singing and I got BARS!
Tell us one thing majority of people don’t know about you.
A.T.: I’m actually socially awkward.
Sobe: One of my biggest goals is to score a movie.
Kenny: I’m a brilliant writer! I have an interest in crafting cinema. I wrote a movie script with T.Lee in college that never came out but I enjoy the idea of crafting movies, television shows.
Why do you feel that you should win a COSIGN Award?
We feel that we should win a COSIGN Award because we truly care about our brand. We are extremely passionate about pushing our brand to the forefront. And lastly, with or without this award (or any award for that matter) we would continue to work just as hard to achieve our goals.
Who do you #COSIGN and why?
Sobe: Baddie Brunch. That is such an incredible brand filled with organic growth. We are truly happy for the success that Sydney Chandler is achieving. Also Brandon Miller with BE GREAT, tremendous positivity.
A.T.: Baddie Brunch or Black Canvas. They both are great events they help to uplift our community, as well as provide a fun space for their respective groups (black women, and musicians/artists.)
