Glow Up: How Soul Sent is Redefining Candle Culture
In a world where candles often serve as mere decorations, Soul Sent is redefining the craft with a harmonious blend of artistry, sustainability, and faith. Known for their sculpted candles and hand-crafted jars, each piece is more than just a product—it’s a masterpiece rooted in purpose and creativity. By prioritizing premium, eco-conscious materials, Soul Sent ensures a clean burn while honoring their commitment to the planet. Beyond their stunning aesthetic appeal, these candles and jars are designed to inspire, offering a thoughtful and artistic touch to any space. In this Q&A, we dive into the vision, craftsmanship, and heart behind Soul Sent, discovering how they’re lighting the way to a new era of candle artistry.
1. What inspired the creation of Soul Sent, and how did the journey begin for you?
After I graduated college, right before COVID hit, I knew I needed an alternative path, everything felt uncertain, and everyone had stopped working. Initially, I had a business plan for a clothing line, but I felt drawn to explore beyond fashion. During a casual conversation about potential business ideas, my husband, LaTrell, suggested, “What about candles?” That idea sparked something in us both, and we dove into research. We wanted our work to inspire others spiritually while captivating them with our scents and creative design. And that’s how Soul Sent emerged a brand embodying soul, scent, and inspiration.
2. What are some of your favorite scents in the collection, and how do you choose the fragrances for each candle?
Our Eternity Collection features six of our most popular year-round scents, though two clear favorites often sell out: Morning Wood and Soul Ties. Part of our men’s collection, Morning Wood has become a standout, thanks not only to its memorable name (shoutout to LaTrell for that!) but also its captivating scent. With notes of Cedar Musk and Lavender, it brings a refreshing aroma that instantly revitalizes any room.
Soul Ties is another beloved fragrance, making our Eternity Collection a must have for anyone wanting to keep their space filled with timeless, inviting scents year-round.
3. Many of your candles carry symbolic meanings or messages. How do you decide on the themes and designs for new products?
Our scents and names are crafted with purpose. Inspiration often flows from the fragrance itself, complemented by spiritual and biblical themes that resonate with our brand’s values. In terms of design, we embrace a minimalist aesthetic, with natural colors that mirror the world around us. Each candle is meant to spark an emotional response, fostering a sense of connection and inclusivity for everyone who experiences our creations.
4. Soul Sent’s candles are described as more than just decor items. How do you hope people feel when they use your products?
We hope each person who brings a Soul Sent candle into their home finds it to be more than just decor but a piece that completes their space. We’re thrilled by the excitement people show when choosing our products, as they see them as not just candles but as beautiful, engaging pieces for their home.
5. Could you share a memorable experience or story from a customer who connected deeply with your brand?
We’re truly grateful for our community and the support they give. A recent experience that comes to mind is at the Frisco Fresh Market, we were chatting with a couple when a woman we’d met at a Women’s Expo walked up with her husband. She was thrilled to see us there, explaining she’d made the trip specifically to stock up on our candles and wanted her husband to smell them in person. Her enthusiasm caught the attention of the couple, who ended up making a purchase as well. That kind of genuine connection is a blessing and a bonus when it leads to sales!
6. Your team has managed to create an aesthetic that’s both modern and timeless. What influences your design choices?
Finding our design direction was a journey. At first, I felt the pressure of industry trends, but I soon realized our strength lay in embracing our originality. Now, I trust my instincts, even if it means stepping away from what’s popular among other candle brands. This approach allows us to create a unique, modern aesthetic that still feels timeless.
7. As a company based in Texas, how has the local culture and community influenced the growth of Soul Sent?
The Texas community’s support has been invaluable to us, and their loyalty is something we deeply cherish. Many people are surprised that our candles thrive even in the summer heat, but we designed Soul Sent with Texas in mind. Our customer base spans diverse backgrounds, unified in their commitment to elevating local businesses. Building something lasting takes a strong community, and we’re incredibly grateful to have theirs.
8. What’s next for Soul Sent? Are there any new products, initiatives, or events on the horizon that you’re excited to share with us?
We’re approaching our third year, and while we’re frequently asked about a storefront, we’re leaning towards going mobile. By year five, we hope to offer a pop-up experience that includes candle-making classes, school visits, and nonprofit collaborations. We want Soul Sent to be everywhere, making each encounter a full experience. Plus, merchandise is on the way, I created merchandise for LaTrell and it has sparked enough interest that people have tried to buy them right off him!
9. Last but not least, who was the first person to #COSIGN Soul Sent, helping fuel the brand’s growth, and who do you #COSIGN?
We have to thank our friends, Jordan and Chaisten, from PLUGHUB. Before we even launched, they invited us to an event in July 2022. At that point, it was March, and they asked if we could be ready by then. Up for the challenge, we debuted at their event and sold a remarkable number of candles, boosting our confidence. Since then, we’ve met incredible people who’ve supported us, like Jason with DFWVINTAGESWAPMEET, Larry and Robin Curry with Metro Sports Fieldhouse, and Alexa with Creative Crew Company. They’ve all opened doors for us, and we’re grateful for the platforms they provided.
