At one point in time, Hollywood was at the feet of Will Smith. People under a certain age may even be unaware that he was a Grammy-winning rapper before he was an actor. He won our hearts in the classic sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and went on to star in his first blockbuster film, “Bad Boys,” alongside Martin Lawrence. He followed up with “Independence Day,” one of the biggest films to come out of the ’90s. It wasn’t until “Men In Black” that he was solidified as the new king of the box office.

What followed soon after were a few misses, but mostly a string of undeniable hits. Films such as “Hitch,” “I Robot,” and “I Am Legend” captured our hearts. Movies like “Ali” and “The Pursuit of Happiness” garnered him Oscar nominations. It was safe to say that Will Smith was untouchable for some time. “Hancock” was his first film to not go over so well with fans, since “Wild Wild West” almost a decade earlier. It did well at the box office but garnered mixed reviews. It was followed by “Seven Pounds,” another film that divided his fan base. As the years went by, more and more films were released to mixed and negative reviews. The film, “After Earth,” was considered the death blow for a period of time.

The turning point came in December of 2017 when Will Smith joined Instagram. Similar to DJ Khaled’s takeover of Snapchat, Will Smith’s popularity online spread like wildfire. He quickly became the most popular person on the social media platform. The time that’s followed has led to Will Smith being catapulted back in the public eye. This leads us to 2019 where Will Smith has three movies coming out. The question on most peoples minds is, “Will his recent surge of popularity lead to box office receipts?” One film is an animated feature, another is a live-action remake of a Disney classic, and another is a classic action style film. As a personal fan of Will Smith’s, I believe this will turn out to be a very successful year for him. Some may feel differently, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the people to decide if he should be put back on top. Since his reign halted, comedian Kevin Hart, and former wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, among others, have taken over Hollywood. With this year’s slate, along with the third film in the “Bad Boys” franchise coming out next year, we will see if Will Smith can ascend back to the top.
