Chance

Chance the Rapper delivers feel-good waves with his third tape, Coloring Book, Thursday night. The project, released exclusively on Apple Music, follows the Chicago rapper’s 2013 Acid Rap. Many artists showed love in the form of features: Kanye West, Lil Wayne , 2 Chainz, Justin Bieber, Future, Young Thug, Kirk Franklin, and more.

“I don’t make songs for free, I make songs for freedom.”

The project’s tone is set with the inspirational anthem, “All We Got”, which sees Lil Chano head the Chicago Children’s Choir, with an assist from Kanye. This ode to music-lovers pretty much sums up the project: a collection of moods that sonically showcases what inspires Chance. No topic is off limits either. This is apparent on the Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz feature “No Problem”. From label problems, “if one more label try to stop me, it’s gone be some dred head n***** in your lobby,” the pitfalls of fame, to the more money more problems perspective.

Showcasing a wide array of beats, what ultimately ties the majority project together is Chance’s soulful melodies and a consistent gospel undertone. This is best illustrated on the Kirk Franklin and T-Pain assisted “Finish Line/Drown”. You will catch a choir in the background on a lot of the songs, which adds an honest amount of hope to all the problems, issues, and hurdles discussed on the project.

Stand out tracks include “Same Drugs”, the Bieber collab “Juke Jam”, “Angels”, and my personal fav “D.R.A.M. Sings Special”. Chance’s Coloring Book gets an official COSIGN from us!
