Shanté Williams is a Killeen-raised Houston DJ, who spins under the moniker DJ Shanté. As a child, she was into music, and recalls “the good ol’ days” of coming home from school and downloading songs from Limewire with her brother, and burning CDs. Her love of music comes from her father, who’s a also a DJ (of course he was one before Shanté was), and who inspired her to take up the craft. So weekly, she would sit in the booth with a friend that was also just starting as a DJ, until she learned.

Now she’s three years in, but she didn’t begin as a DJ. Originally she was a socialite, hosting parties around town, and having built her notoriety that way, the transition to DJ was easy. “Being a young ‘female’ DJ made me more marketable,” she says. And she knew she was going to make it a career when she would ask her promoter friends to let her open up and they would then book her for the whole night. It also encouraged her to continue to practice until she became great.

She’s found quite the success since then, getting a position at 93.7 The Beat, after the program director heard her set in the club, and loved it. “Then a couple months later he offered me a position as a holiday mixshow Mmixer,” she says. “After I killed holidays, I was offered a weekly slot middays with Devi Dev.” From there, she’s flipped her popularity into a brand ambassadorships for Hpnotiq and Boost Mobile.

Shanté subscribes to the DJ school of thought that breaking artists is a big part of her job. “One thing I’m known for in Houston is supporting our local talent, or talent in general,” she says.

We #COSIGN DJ Shanté for carving her own path in a male dominated field, and for finding success in it. We also like the fact that she is about putting artists on as opposed to riding waves and trends. Based on her track record, we fully expect that she will fulfill her goal of becoming a radio personality with her own show, and her goal of producing her own music. She looks to be known for creating a platform for Houston talent. “I want to be known for always supporting and putting on for my city,” she says.
